Questions and answers
What can you cover? anything?
We can cover almost any tattoo. However, the best candidates for cover-ups are – faded or old tattoos, smaller designs with minimal black ink, tattoos with lighter colors or designs with plenty of negative space.
Keep in mind that cover-ups typically require a larger design than the original tattoo. Dark, dense, or large tattoos may even need laser tattoo removal sessions before attempting a cover-up.
It’s wise to schedule an initial consultation first so we can better explore your ideas.
What is the best ink for tattoo cover up?
The best inks for tattoo cover-ups are high-quality, pigment-dense professional tattoo inks with excellent opacity. Ideal characteristics include:
- Brands known for color saturation and brightness
- Inks specifically formulated for cover-up work
- Darker and more vibrant pigments that can effectively conceal existing ink
- Black and darker colors like deep blues, purples, and reds work particularly well
Your artist should select appropriate inks based on your skin tone and the specific tattoo being covered.
When can a tattoo not be covered up?
Some tattoos—especially those that are very dark, large, densely inked, or have significant scarring/keloids—can be too challenging to cover without prior laser removal.
Recent tattoos (less than 1-2 years old) and designs with heavy black or tribal work, as well as tattoos in sensitive areas with thin skin, may also not be ideal for cover-ups.
How do you take care of a tattoo cover up?
Coverup tattoo need extra care – you can read about more by browsing our tattoo aftercare. Follow your artist’s instructions closely, keep the area clean and moisturized with approved products, and avoid sun exposure, swimming, soaking, and excessive sweating during healing.
Allow extra time for healing and use high SPF sunscreen once healed to maintain color integrity.
What are the disadvantages of tattoo cover ups?
Coverup tattoo can limit your design options, often requiring larger, darker, or more complex artwork. There’s a risk of “ghosting,” where remnants of the original tattoo show through, and the process might require multiple sessions.
Do tattoo cover ups take longer to heal?
Yes, they typically take longer to heal. Because the skin is already traumatized, cover-ups may require 2-4 weeks for surface healing and up to 4-6 weeks for full settling, making diligent aftercare essential.
